What staying in Birmingham city centre is actually like, which part suits which trip, and every city-centre hotel in our selection compared.
The city centre is the default answer for most Birmingham trips, and for good reason: it is flat, compact, holds both main stations, and you can cross it on foot in about twenty minutes. Roughly a third of our whole selection sits inside it.
The catch is that central covers four fairly distinct districts. The stretch around New Street and the Bullring is retail and rail. Broad Street and Brindleyplace are venue and nightlife. Colmore Row and Snow Hill are the business quarter and go quiet after seven. Southside around the Hippodrome is theatre and restaurants. Picking the wrong one does not ruin a trip, but it adds a walk to every evening.

The trade-off
Position is the thing you are buying, and parking is the thing you give up. Central Birmingham has very little hotel parking, and the properties that do have it charge close to public garage rates.

Editorial picks
Each pick names the situation it suits. A hotel that is right for one trip is usually wrong for another.

Distances are straight-line, calculated from each property's own coordinates. Walking times are derived from those distances with an allowance for street routing, so treat them as indicative for comparing hotels against each other rather than as measured route times.
Thumbnails show the nearest landmark or the area each property sits in, never the property itself. We hold no licensed photograph of these hotels and we do not generate one.
A dash means we could not establish that detail, not that the answer is no. We leave it open rather than guess.

New Street sits under Grand Central in the middle of the area, with Moor Street a few minutes east for Chiltern services and Snow Hill to the north. West Midlands Metro trams run from Grand Central through the centre and out along Broad Street to Five Ways and Edgbaston Village.
Driving in is the weak point. The centre is ringed by one-way systems and bus gates, and the parking is public rather than hotel-owned. If you are arriving by car and staying more than a night, compare an Edgbaston or Hagley Road hotel with its own car park before committing to the middle.
If central prices are high for your dates, the two obvious alternatives are Edgbaston and Hagley Road, which is on the tram line and has far more parking, and the Jewellery Quarter, which is a short walk north-west and keeps the walkability while feeling considerably calmer.
For most trips, yes. It is flat, compact, holds both main stations and puts the arena, the ICC, the theatres and the shopping within walking distance. The main reasons to look elsewhere are parking and quiet.
Around New Street for rail arrivals and shopping, Broad Street for the arena and the ICC, Colmore Row for a quieter business stay, Southside for the theatre. The differences are small in distance and noticeable in character.
It depends where. Broad Street and Southside are genuinely lively at weekends. The Colmore Row and Snow Hill blocks are quiet after the offices empty, which is the trade some people want.
Few of them do. Several point guests at a nearby multi-storey instead. If parking is a requirement, our parking page separates the two arrangements.
It sits at the upper end of the city's range on typical nightly price, alongside the Jewellery Quarter, with Edgbaston a little below and the outer areas lower again. Event nights widen that gap because the centre fills first.
