Hotels near
Hotels near the University of Birmingham compared on distance, rail access via University station and parking, for graduations, open days and visits.
Graduation weekends and open days concentrate demand into a handful of dates, and the campus is three miles south-west of the city centre in Edgbaston. Those two facts shape everything on this page.
Very few hotels sit next to the campus itself. The realistic choice is between the small number of Edgbaston and Selly Oak properties within a short distance, and the much larger city-centre stock connected by a direct train. The table below shows both, ordered by distance from the campus.
Editorial picks
Each pick names the situation it suits. A hotel that is right for one trip is usually wrong for another.

Distances are straight-line, calculated from each property's own coordinates. Walking times are derived from those distances with an allowance for street routing, so treat them as indicative for comparing hotels against each other rather than as measured route times.
Thumbnails show the nearest landmark or the area each property sits in, never the property itself. We hold no licensed photograph of these hotels and we do not generate one.

Roads, canals, parks and stations are drawn from OpenStreetMap. Hotels are plotted from their own coordinates.
The university has its own railway station, called University, on the Cross-City Line from Birmingham New Street. The main campus is around a five minute walk from the platform. That is the single most useful fact for booking: a hotel near New Street is a direct train and a short walk from the campus, with no changes.
For a graduation with an inflexible ceremony time and formal clothes, the short walk from a nearby hotel is worth more than usual. For an open day with a flexible start, the city centre gives you a better evening and a wider choice of rooms.
Campus parking is limited and comes under real pressure on ceremony days, when several thousand extra visitors arrive within the same couple of hours. Check what the university itself publishes for your specific date rather than relying on a general assumption.
If you are driving, the low-friction pattern is a hotel with its own car park and the Cross-City Line into University station, which sidesteps the campus car parks completely.
Only a small number of properties sit within a short distance of the campus, and they appear at the top of the table. Beyond those you are into Edgbaston and then the city centre, which is where most visitors end up staying.
Yes. University station is on the Cross-City Line from Birmingham New Street, and the main campus is about a five minute walk from the platform. It is the simplest way in from a city-centre hotel.
If the ceremony time is early or the party is large, the handful of hotels near the campus save a lot of coordination. Otherwise the city centre plus the Cross-City Line works well and gives you far more choice, especially when campus-adjacent rooms sell out months ahead.
The QE sits immediately beside the university and is served by the same station, so a hotel chosen for one works for the other. Our hospital page covers that trip in more detail.
Graduation weeks are the pinch point, and the small local supply goes early. If your date is fixed and known months ahead, book the nearby options as soon as you have it, and treat the city centre as the fallback rather than the other way round.
