Best Birmingham hotels

Best city centre hotels in Birmingham

An editorial shortlist of Birmingham city centre hotels, separated by rail arrival, venue access, parking and price rather than one overall ranking.

  • 20 properties compared
  • Checked September 2026

Almost every hotel in central Birmingham can call itself central, which makes the label useless on its own. The centre is small enough to walk across in twenty minutes and varied enough that the wrong side of it adds a return journey to every evening.

This page is a shortlist rather than a directory. It picks the city-centre properties in our selection that stand up on a specific job, and says which job. If you want the complete list of everything in the centre, including the properties that did not make a shortlist, our city centre area page carries it.

Which part of the centre

Four sub-areas behave differently and the choice between them matters more than the star rating.

  • Around New Street and the Bullring. Best for rail arrivals and shopping. Almost no hotel parking.
  • Broad Street and Brindleyplace. Best for the arena, the ICC and Symphony Hall. Livelier at night, more parking, roughly fifteen minutes from the station.
  • Colmore Row and Snow Hill. The business district. Quieter in the evening, close to the Children's Hospital and the Jewellery Quarter.
  • Southside and the Hippodrome. Theatre and restaurants, slightly cheaper, a short walk from the station.

Editorial picks

Which of these to choose

Each pick names the situation it suits. A hotel that is right for one trip is usually wrong for another.

Distances are straight-line, calculated from each property's own coordinates. Walking times are derived from those distances with an allowance for street routing, so treat them as indicative for comparing hotels against each other rather than as measured route times.

Thumbnails show the nearest landmark or the area each property sits in, never the property itself. We hold no licensed photograph of these hotels and we do not generate one.

A dash means we could not establish that detail, not that the answer is no. We leave it open rather than guess.

What each one actually offers

Birmingham city centre
Leonardo Royal Hotel Birmingham. New Street is around 15 minutes on foot and the Bullring around 20 minutes on foot, so the centre is walkable without planning transport. The trade-off: nothing about it stands out sharply enough to pick it over the other 39 properties we compare within a mile, so it comes down to rate on your dates.
Birmingham city centre
Hilton Garden Inn Birmingham Brindleyplace. It has a pool, which only a handful of Birmingham hotels do. The trade-off: parking is a nearby garage rather than the hotel's own, so that walk is part of every arrival and departure.
Birmingham city centre
Macdonald Burlington Hotel. New Street is around 2 minutes on foot, which is about as short as a rail arrival in Birmingham gets. The trade-off: there is no hotel car park, so a driver needs one of the public garages around Burlington Arcade and the walk that comes with it.
Birmingham city centre
The Grand Hotel Birmingham. New Street is around 7 minutes on foot and the Bullring around 10 minutes on foot, so the centre is walkable without planning transport. The trade-off: there is no hotel car park, so a driver needs one of the public garages around Church St and the walk that comes with it.
Birmingham city centre
Holiday Inn Express Birmingham - Snow Hill by IHG. New Street is around 15 minutes on foot and the Bullring around 15 minutes on foot, so the centre is walkable without planning transport. The trade-off: there is no hotel car park, so a driver needs one of the public garages around Snow Hill Plaza and the walk that comes with it.
Birmingham city centre
Holiday Inn Birmingham City Centre by IHG. New Street is around 4 minutes on foot, which is about as short as a rail arrival in Birmingham gets. The trade-off: there is no hotel car park, so a driver needs one of the public garages around Smallbrook Queensway and the walk that comes with it.

Common questions

Where is the best area to stay in Birmingham city centre?

It depends on the trip. Around New Street for a rail arrival or a shopping weekend, Broad Street for the arena and the ICC, Colmore Row for a quieter business stay, Southside for the theatre. The centre is small enough that none of these is a bad choice, but the wrong one adds a walk to every evening.

Is it worth staying in the city centre without a car?

Yes, and it is the strongest argument for a central hotel. The centre is flat and compact, both main stations are in it, and the tram covers the Broad Street corridor. A car in central Birmingham is mostly a parking problem.

How is this page different from the city centre area page?

This page is a shortlist with a reason attached to each pick. The area page is the full picture of staying in the centre, including every property in our selection and the practical detail about the area itself.

Which central hotels have parking?

Fewer than you would hope, and mostly at the Broad Street and Hagley Road end. Our parking page separates the hotels with their own car park from those that point you at a public garage.

How far apart are the central hotels really?

The whole centre is walkable in about twenty minutes end to end. In practice the meaningful gap is between the New Street cluster and the Broad Street cluster, which is roughly fifteen minutes apart and matters most late at night.
