Hotels near
Hotels near Birmingham Hippodrome compared on walking distance, dinner options nearby, parking and price band for a pre-theatre stay.
A theatre night has a tighter schedule than most trips. You arrive, you eat, you sit down at a fixed time, and afterwards you want the shortest possible distance between the auditorium and a bed. That makes the Hippodrome one of the easier Birmingham venues to book well.
It sits on Hurst Street, in the Southside and Chinese Quarter district, a few minutes south of the Bullring. The table below ranks hotels by distance, and for this venue the top of that list is genuinely worth paying for.
Editorial picks
Each pick names the situation it suits. A hotel that is right for one trip is usually wrong for another.

Distances are straight-line, calculated from each property's own coordinates. Walking times are derived from those distances with an allowance for street routing, so treat them as indicative for comparing hotels against each other rather than as measured route times.
Thumbnails show the nearest landmark or the area each property sits in, never the property itself. We hold no licensed photograph of these hotels and we do not generate one.

Roads, canals, parks and stations are drawn from OpenStreetMap. Hotels are plotted from their own coordinates.
The practical advantage of the Hippodrome's location is that it sits inside the Chinese Quarter, so pre-theatre dining is on the doorstep rather than a detour. That changes the hotel calculation: you do not need a hotel with a restaurant, which widens the field considerably.
New Street is a short walk north, so a rail arrival works well for a matinee or an evening performance without an overnight stay. If you are staying over, the hotels between the theatre and the station cover both needs.
Hurst Street and the surrounding blocks have public parking, and the Bullring garages are within walking distance. Hotel car parks are scarce this close to the centre.
For an evening performance, the sequence that works is to park once at the hotel or a single garage and walk to everything. Moving the car between dinner and the show is where theatre nights go wrong.
The table is ordered by distance from Hurst Street. The nearest properties are a few minutes on foot, which for a theatre night with a fixed curtain time is worth more than it would be for a general city break.
The theatre sits inside the Chinese Quarter and Southside, so there is a dense concentration of restaurants within a couple of minutes' walk. That means you do not need to prioritise a hotel with its own restaurant.
It is a short walk north through the centre, roughly ten minutes. Whether a train still runs depends on your destination and the night, so check the last service before relying on it rather than assuming.
Southside and the Chinese Quarter are active in the evening, mainly around restaurants and bars rather than large late-night venues. It is livelier than the Colmore Row side and calmer than Broad Street.
Only if you are travelling far enough that the return journey is the problem. For a matinee, a rail arrival at New Street and a walk south is usually simpler than a hotel.
