Best for: arriving by car and a spa weekend out of the city
Birmingham area
Sutton Coldfield compared: green, spacious and north of the city, home to the country house and golf resort hotels that the centre cannot offer.
Sutton Coldfield sits seven or eight miles north of the centre and does not feel like Birmingham at all. It is greener, more spacious, and it is where the country house hotels, golf resorts and destination spas are, because they need land the city does not have.
Almost nobody stays here to visit Birmingham. People stay here for the hotels themselves, for a spa weekend, a golf trip or a wedding, and treat the city as an optional day out. That is the right way to read this area.

The trade-off
Grounds, spa facilities and quiet, in exchange for being genuinely out of the city. Assume a car and a twenty to thirty minute drive each way for anything in the centre.

Editorial picks
Each pick names the situation it suits. A hotel that is right for one trip is usually wrong for another.

Distances are straight-line, calculated from each property's own coordinates. Walking times are derived from those distances with an allowance for street routing, so treat them as indicative for comparing hotels against each other rather than as measured route times.
Thumbnails show the nearest landmark or the area each property sits in, never the property itself. We hold no licensed photograph of these hotels and we do not generate one.
A dash means we could not establish that detail, not that the answer is no. We leave it open rather than guess.

Sutton Coldfield has its own station on the Cross-City Line from Birmingham New Street, and Four Oaks and Wylde Green are on the same route, so the town centre is reachable by train. The country house properties themselves are generally not, and a taxi from the nearest station is normal.
Sutton Park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe, is on the doorstep, which is a genuine reason to stay here if you want space rather than pavement.
For a spa stay with a similar character on the other side of the city, the Solihull and Warwickshire fringe properties cover the same ground. For anything Birmingham-centred, stay in the centre and visit a spa on a day rate instead.
Not really, unless the hotel is the point of the trip. It is seven or eight miles north and most of the notable properties are not walkable from a station. For a spa or golf weekend it is exactly right.
Sutton Coldfield station is on the Cross-City Line from New Street, so the town centre is a straightforward train journey. The country house hotels usually need a car or a taxi to reach that station.
They are not the same kind of stay. Country house spas have grounds, larger thermal suites and packages built around them. City hotel spas are compact urban facilities. Our spa page compares both.
The country house and resort properties sit at the upper end of the market, but they include facilities that city hotels at the same price do not. Compare what the rate covers rather than the rate alone.
Sutton Park is the main draw, along with the golf courses attached to several of the hotels. It is a quiet, green area rather than a destination in its own right.
